Prisoners could have presented information in the way most movies do-stacking details in a chronological, linear fashion that’s digestible and allows viewers to go from a place of total ignorance to a place of complete understanding. That idea of the maze goes beyond the characters to the structure of the story. Whether that’s the death of a child, the loss of faith in God, discovering a parent who has committed suicide, murdering a murderer, having your child abducted, torturing someone you know is guilty but won’t confess, or a high-stakes job where lives are on the line. Prisoners puts that concept onto how people struggle to work through and escape from their traumas. The whole concept of a maze is that people become lost in the convolutions and complications of the structure. Mazes end up being a bigger deal than you’d probably expect.

While the FBI launched an investigation that concluded in 1979 that all three men had died, not everyone is as convinced - particularly the Anglin brothers’ two sisters who claimed in 2012 that Clarence had called them as a free man. Morris and the Anglins, meanwhile, arrived at the utility tunnel, grabbed their raft, slid down a pipe from the prison roof - and snuck to the shore to inflate their raft. In a twist of fate, it had simply become stuck. When the time finally came, West was left behind when he failed to remove the grill of his ventilation duct. Most resourceful of all, they had created papier-mâché dummy heads and left them poking out of their cell beds. The ducts led to a utility tunnel where they stored a six-by-14-foot inflatable raft made of raincoats they had accumulated. They covered the ducts with cardboard resembling the cell wall color during the day. Bringing the Anglins and car thief Allen West into the fold, they stole spoons and saw blades and spent over half a year enlarging the ventilation ducts in each of their cells - with Morris playing his accordion to dampen the nightly noise.
